The Zenfone 5Z was Asus’ flagship device for the year 2018. The manufacturer has surely laid down a pretty solid foundation when it comes to the software and updates. The phone was launched with Android 8.0 Oreo out-of-the-box and has already received two major Android version upgrades by now, the latest being the Android 10 update which was released in November 2019. Ever since then Asus has been consistently rolling out monthly security updates for the Zenfone 5Z based on Android 10.

Despite that fact, it was Asus Zenfone 6/6z, launched this year, that received the stable Android 10 update first. We suspect that the manufacturer wanted to focus all its attention on its latest flagship first. Anyhow, the important thing is that Android 10 for Asus Zenfone 5Z is now available. The update was announced directly at the ZenTalk forums and is currently rolling out to the users worldwide.

The Need for Manually Installing Firmware Updates

Like any other Android device, firmware updates (also known as FOTA Updates) for the Asus Zenfone 5Z are rolled out over-the-air. Due to the nature of these OTA updates, they are rolled out in phases and are influenced by factors like region and carrier of the device itself.

And so, when Asus releases a software update for your phone, it could take some time before it’s actually available on your specific handset. This time period could range for a few days, to weeks due to the factors we accounted for above.

But if you want, you can skip the waiting period and manually upgrade your Zenfone 5Z to the latest firmware/software version right away. This could be done by downloading and manually installing the full ROM package on your Asus Zenfone 5Z using the in-built updater. Manually updating your phone using this method doesn’t require you to unlock the bootloader or do anything else that could affect your phone’s integrity. On the other hand, if your phone has TWRP recovery installed, you could still update by flashing the full ROM using it.

Before you begin, make sure that you check for any automatic FOTA update by going to “Settings” → “System updates” on your phone.

How to Manually Install a Firmware Update on Asus Zenfone 5Z

Installing a firmware update could be done via two different ways/methods, as follows.

  • The first method is for an average user and uses the in-built updater of the ZenUI software. This should be used in completely stock environment without any software modifications done to the phone.
  • The second method is for users who have installed TWRP recovery on their Zenfone 5Z and further rooted it.

So, follow the method accordingly.

Method 1: Using In-Built Updater

Asus phones running the ZenUI software, such as the Zenfone 5Z has an in-built update mechanism within the software. The updater can detect a full ROM package when placed at the correct location and install it automatically for you. Simply follow the steps listed below.

  1. Download the full ROM package (ZIP file) of the firmware update you want to install on your Asus Zenfone 5Z.
  2. Connect your phone to the PC using the USB cable and enable the file transfer (MTP) mode.
  3. Copy the downloaded full ROM package to the root of your phone’s internal storage, this is, outside all the folders.
  4. Next, disconnect the phone from the PC and reboot it.
  5. Once your phone reboots, you should see the “Select update package” prompt on the screen.
  6. Press “Ok” to confirm and install the firmware update on your Zenfone 5Z.
  7. After the update has been installed, press “Restart” to reboot your phone into the updated system (OS).

If the above method fails for some reason, you can alternatively use ADB sideload to manually install the OTA as well.

Method 2: Using TWRP Recovery

If you have installed TWRP and rooted your Zenfone 5Z, then it’s still possible to install the latest firmware update on your phone. You can use TWRP itself to flash the full ROM package. To do this, follow the steps below.

Note: If you’re going to install Android 10 full ROM, make sure that you download and use the latest version of TWRP from here.

  1. Download the full ROM package for your Asus Zenfone 5Z.
  2. Connect your phone to the PC using the USB cable and enable the file transfer (MTP) mode.
  3. Transfer the downloaded firmware update package to the root of your phone’s internal storage.
  4. Once the file has been transferred, disconnect the phone and power it off.
  5. Now boot your Zenfone 5Z into TWRP recovery by holding the Volume Up and Power buttons together.
  6. Press the ‘Install’ button in TWRP and select the full ROM package that you transferred earlier to the phone’s internal storage.
  7. Finally, swipe the button on the screen to flash the full ROM package and install the firmware update on your Zenfone 5Z.
Note: This will uninstall TWRP and unroot your phone. To preserve both, simply flash the TWRP installer (twrp-installer-ASUS_Z01RD-3.3.1-12.zip) and Magisk (Magisk-v20.4.zip) right after the full ROM.
  8. After the flashing process finishes, press “Reboot System”.

Your phone should now boot into the latest firmware version along with the latest security patches.
